ABC: 1913-23 UK – ”All British Engine Company” used a transversely-mounted flat twin engine in 1918. Designed by Granville Bradshaw, the ABC was a sensation at the 1919 Motor Cycle Show. With a sprung frame and opposed twin-cylinder engine the ABC was a very advanced design.

AJS: 1911-67 UK – Manufacture of the well known AJS range of motorcycles was begun in 1909 by Albert John Stevensd. Albert, the son of an English blacksmith, had started in the motor trade 12 years earlier when he began building petrol engines. He was soon joined in partnership by three of his brothers. In 1931 AJS was bought by the rival Matchless Company. In 1938 Matchless also bought Sunbeam and combined the three companies into Associated Motor Cycles. .

In 1923, BMW built its first complete motorcycle, adopting a transversely mounted shaft-driven design which is now a BMW standard. BMW  set a number of world records during the 1920s and 1930s. In 1936 a BMW 500 established a world speed record  on the Frankfurt Autobahn of 278 km/h (174 mph) that would stand for 14 years.The R51 was the first model with telescopic front suspension

Brough Superior machines were built without regard to cost and were known as the Rolls Royce of motorcycles. Lawrence of Arabia owned seven of these famous motorcycles and was killed riding one.
