Get a good manual and read about it. Obviously any gouges or deep scratches are unnacceptable. You should also check the wear of the cylinder walls, and make sure they are still within specifications. Sure you could just throw a new piston on rings in there and hope for the best but a careful rebuild will serve you better in the long run.
