I just had a long session with the points and now things look better. The timing was way off after I put new points on. I corrected the timing the best I could using a voltmeter (black lead to ground, red lead to the points wire) by moving the points base so that the voltage at the points wire goes from 0.03 to 12.3 exactly when the timing scribe marks line up, for both sets left and right. I wish I had one of those timing gauges to measure piston distance BTDC but for now I'll just trust the scribe marks. It is rainy and cold (~45) here today.
