Rock Art of the Burrup Peninsula (Murujuga) -
A personal exploration
(includes a description of the Flying Foam Massacre)
This CDROM Ebook incorporates several hundred
images of the Burrup Peninsula and the ancient petrolglyphs (rock art) which
abound in this area.
The Burrup Peninsula lies in the Pilbara area of
the remote North-West of Western Australia. The landscape is incredibly
ancient and records possibly the oldest and most extensive gallery of
primitive rock art in the World. Despite being of priceless heritage value
this area is under great threat from industrial development. Some areas of
enormous importance to the idigenous record are actually planned for
development. By now some areas recorded on this CD may have already been
destroyed.
Along with the photograph record this CDROM
includes a description of the area and it's heritage value.
In the 1860s the original inhabitants of the
peninsula were dispersed in an action known as the Flying Foam massacre.
Photos of the location and a description of this event are included on this CDROM.
Reference is also made to the early settlement of
the area and the establishment of Roebourne and Cossack along with photos of
early settlement heritage buildings.
The CD based Ebook is a must read and view before
visiting this area as it will add to your understanding of the landscape and
history of this unique area.
